COMING EVENTS

INSURANCE COMMISSIONER NEEDED

For years, Larry Vogel has faithfully managed our several insurance policies.  Well, Larry is away and may not feel like taking this on when he returns, so we are looking for someone to take over that task.  No particular experience is required but if you have an insurance background that would be even better.  Contact Allen Griffith for more information.

The next book club meeting is Wednesday October 22nd at 7 pm.  We will be reading Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer, a fascinating story of religious extremism and its impact on the Mormon Church.  The book focuses on the activities of generally pro- polygamy Mormon fundamentalists, from Joseph Smith and Brigham Young to the Lafferty brothers, and details how these extremists twist their religious views to justify a variety of behaviors, including murder and kidnapping.

Our Christ Peace Garden Needs YOU!!  Could you please give a bit of your time this fall to help us harvest crops to be delivered to the needy??  Sign up at the Information Center.

Our CELC food pantry needs:  canned meat, pasta and pasta sauces, rice and whole beans of any kind, cookies and crackers, canned fruits, and low sodium foods.  Thanks, from the Service Committee.

Panera Bread and Giant Gift Cards proceeds support our youth programs.  Please call Lois Culler at 703-591-6917.

Nursery Sign Up sheets for the coming months are in the Information Center.

Devotional booklets for October – December are in the Information Center.

World Communion Sunday

World Communion Sunday originated in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1936, but quickly spread to other Christian traditions as a way to celebrate our oneness in Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.  All Christians are called to serve the gospel by telling the Good News and being peacemakers for the sake of the world.

World Communion Sunday has been supported and encouraged by the Office of Evangelism of the National Council of Churches since 1940.  Celebrating our unity in Christ at the table to which he calls us is an important way that Christians can witness to the truth of John 3:16 amidst a broken and suffering world.  Today, Christians around the globe celebrate the Lord’s Supper according to their own tradition, yet united in faith

…to lead a life worthy of the calling to which we have been called, with all

humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

There is one body and one Spirit, …one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one

God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.  (Ephesians 4:1b-6)
